Sophie Vogel-Nakamura is a graduate of King George Secondary School and is currently attending the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. In her first year as a 72nd Seaforth Highlanders Army Cadet, Sophie joined the Biathlon team. Within that first year she qualified for Nationals and won the Jean-Philippe Award for being the top female biathlete. In 2016 she was selected to coach the provincial biathlon team and took on the role as a leader. However there is more, throughout high school Sophie participated in x-country running, field hockey, ice hockey, track and field and ultimate. Alexandra led her team to Nationals three times and now plays on the UBC Thunderbirds team. Aside from playing on the court, Alexandra volunteers her time coaching and referring games among elementary students.

Lejila Kajevic is a graduate of RA McMath Secondary School and is currently attending the University of British Columbia. With her brother playing soccer, Lejila thought of all the kids who could not afford to play soccer and started the Spring Soccer For All Project. A project aimed for underprivileged children to develop their soccer skills and build the confidence. Through school fundraising, Lejila was able to raise an amazing $14,000 for the project. This was just the beginning for Lejila is involved in various projects and organizations.

Akhilesh Reddy is a graduate of North Secondary School and is currently attending the University of British Columbia. Seeing people in poverty Akhilesh was inspired to create Light a Lamp Rural Development Society. A society that is committed to improving education environments in impoverished areas. Working in collaboration with local business the society was able to raise $3000 in order to provide desks and chairs for schools. However this was just the beginning for the society has grown bigger and holds bigger events throughout the year in order to raise more money that goes right back to helping impoverished schools.

Velaphi Angela Mkwananzi is a graduate of Ecole Panorama Ridge Secondary School and is currently attending Simon Fraser University. Velaphi arrived in Canada at the age of 12 and was faced with learning a new language. Due to her own personal experiences, Velaphi was inspired to create a non-profit organization called Angels for Relief Initiative. This foundation’s goal is to make education much more accessible for the orphans in Africa. She has also started another program called Poetry 4 Shoes, which helps kids in Africa receive shoes. Funded by royalties from her own published work. Velaphi is a true deserving recipient of the SOAR-SFU Community Engagement Scholarship.
Ginah Choi

Ginah Choi is a gradate of R.E. Mountain Secondary School and is currently attending the University of British Columbia. Ginah is a dancer who has trained for years in multiple styles including ballet, jazz, hip hop and tap. She took her dancing abilities to the community by volunteering for the Vancouver Giants Dance Team and was a part of the 2016 BC Summer Games Dance Crew. Abdul Khattab is a graduate of Frank Hurt Secondary School and is currently attending Simon Fraser University. Abdul joined the school’s theatre company in grade 10 and fell in love with the performing arts. Upon completion of the first year with the company only five experienced member remained, however Abdul took the leadership role and began to mentor the new and younger members. His love for acting does not remain only within school for Abdul has also performed within the Surrey Shines event. Aside from acting, Abdul has also been an active member of student council, a communications representative and on the grad committee.

Ruvini Amarasekera is a graduate of Fraser Heights Secondary. She attends Simon Fraser University to study Biomedical Kinesiology and Physiology, which she hopes will lead to a career in medicine. Ruvini has always been intrigued by nature, and how everything manages to work in perfect harmony. She is an avid volunteer for Fraser Health, where she has experience in both a residential and clinical setting. Ruvini was on the school executive team of the Environment Club, Mock Trials, Buddies Club, and LEO Club amongst others. Further, she is passionate about youth engagement, and has started initiatives to help other youth get involved in their communities. To elaborate, Ruvini is part of the Surrey Leadership Youth Council, where they provide grants, workshops, and other resources to local youth. She also played a leading role on the Surrey Leadership Action Conference Planning Team, where they organized the scope of a three-day leadership conference. She has also established a math tutoring club within her school, which provides free tutoring services to students. Ruvini aspires to further her education and work as a physician to directly impact the lives of those around her.
Natalie Morrison

Natalie graduated from Semiahmoo Secondary School and currently attends Simon Fraser University to become a Special Education Teacher. Her community involvement is extensive from teaching Sunday School for over six years at her local church to spending her whole summer for the past three years volunteering as a camp counselor at Stillwood Camp. Her true passion for assisting people with disabilities was sparked when she became a peer tutor for her high school’s Special Education department. Alongside this, she co-founded a school club called Acts for the Elderly in which a group of students met weekly at the local seniors centre and even got to be a part of a multigenerational flash mob. Natalie is a dedicated leader and an avid volunteer who focuses on promoting diversity in the community.
Kerman Pannu

Savannah graduated from Ecole Panorama Ridge Secondary in Surrey, British Columbia. Savannah has been heavily involved with the arts throughout her whole life. She began dancing at the age of 4 and quickly ventured into other types of performing arts. When Savannah entered high school, she joined the school’s dance teams. Eventually, Savannah took over as coach for the Lyrical Team in grade 11 and 12. In her graduating year, Savannah became the first ever Lyrical Coach at her school to lead the Lyrical Team to first place. Savannah attends John Casablanca’s Institute to pursue her dreams of becoming a make-up artist for movie sets. Although Savannah plans to make a career out of make-up artistry, she still plans to teach dance on the side.

Aside from his numerous in and out of school leadership and volunteer endeavours, Praneesh, and his colleagues, hope to soon launch a charitable organization known as Food For Tomorrow, an organization which will work towards helping feed the unfortunate in our local community.
Jasleen Kandola

Jasleen's ultimate goal in life is to be able to get a degree in Mathematics. She attends Simon Fraser University to complete the four-year Bachelor of Science program. After graduating from post-secondary, she dreams to open her own institution to help all the students that are struggling in math.
Chanpreet Mangat

2014 SOAR Community Leadership Scholarship $1000
Chanpreet graduated from Matthew McNair Secondary School and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science at the University of British Columbia. Chanpreet has been a member of the incentive program at her high school for the past five years, constituting a total of 15 outdoor field trips, and a rigorous academic schedule. She is an avid participant in various school clubs and organizations and has also played a leading role in the making of two school play productions. Chanpreet is a dynamic individual who enjoys helping others and participating in community events.
Madelyn Read

2014 SOAR Visual & Performing Arts Scholarship $1000
Madelyn graduated from Templeton Secondary School in Vancouver, British Columbia. She has participated in the theatre program there for five years as an usher, stage manager, production manager and actor. As well, she is an avid singer/songwriter and has attended the Sarah McLachlan School of music for two years. Madelyn is pursing a Bachelor’s degree in Arts & Sciences at Quest University Canada. She hopes to pursue a career in diplomacy, while continuing to sing and act along the way.
Angad Singh Manku

2013 SOAR Leader Scholarship $500
Angad is currently pursing a Bachelor of Science degree at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Angad is an active volunteer with the City of Surrey. He has worked on projects providing water aid to countries such as India and Kenya for the unfortunate citizens. Angad works on an annual event every year with Empowered Club to bring awareness against bullying. He is a role model and leader for many young students, where Angad takes his time out to mentor elementary students about achieving success in life.
